Dermatological Use

Azelaic acid is an anti-inflammatory agent derived from grains such as wheat, rye, and barley.

The ingredient was developed in the early 1890’s and first approved by the FDA in 1995 as a skincare treatment for rosacea. It gained similar approval in the UK in 1995.

Azelaic acid broadened the dermatological toolkit by providing a versatile over-the-counter (up to 10%) and prescription (10-20%) topical treatment for acne, ageing skin, hyperpigmentation, and rosacea.
